In this section, we wanted to highlight and share some of our favorite cat related products that we have personally bought to make our house a better place for us and the cats. We will be sure to include our personal experiences so please take the time to read through them because some of these are expensive so the details do matter. We want you to make the best decision possible for you and your cats so that y0u all have the most enjoyable life together. We will periodically add more things so be sure to check back. We are always learning and cat technology keeps advancing!
We got our cats their wheel within their first year. As you have probably read, Bengals are an intelligent and active breed of cat. This wheel allows them the opportunity to get their energy out in a non-destructive manner. When a Bengal is not sleeping, it tends to be moving. Our friend affectionately referred to them as “roamers”. We cannot recommend this cat wheel enough. It is one of the largest on the market. It is very stable and does not make too much noise, though I would not place it in a bedroom where you sleep - your cat(s) will definitely use it!
We have had ours for about five years now and all three of our adults use it. Initially we thought our adventure cat, Orestes, would use it more, but it ended up being our wallflower bengal, Elektra, who uses it the most! It gives her the opportunity to do some good exercise and stimulates all the energy she builds up throughout the day.
Cats are different than dogs. They can climb things and thus they view the world in a different way. While dogs only live and move in two dimensions (forward/back & left/right), cats also live in the vertical world. That is why is important that we provide them with the opportunity to traverse a room without touching the ground through the help of our normal furniture and cat trees. We have a cat tree in every room. I cannot recommend Kitty Mansions enough! I also suggest googling around for discount codes as I remember using some when we first purchased them.
The other benefit of a cat tree is that they can also add the benefit of being a scratching post. When it comes to scratching and a cat, you have to remember that for every “no” you give a cat (like not scratching a couch), you have to give them a “yes” (like a scratching post) in that space and redirect them to it. We love the Kitty Mansions trees because they come in a variety of sizes and the poles are covered in rope that functions as a scratching post for the cats as well. This allows them to exercise (watch their backs next time you see a cat scratching) and have a signpost that makes them feel they have some space in the room that is theirs too.
Okay, let’s be real - no one enjoys scooping a litter box. Is it hard? No, it isn’t. Is it annoying though? Yes. We’ve had really good routines with scooping in the past before the pandemic. With the new hybrid work model, it does make doing some chores more challenging as we are more focused on work when at home. We decided to give things a shot and got our first Litter Robot 3. It was a great addition, but it did take the cats some time to acclimate. It is loud enough that it attracts the cats’ attention and so they were a little cautious about it. While Medusa and Elektra took to it relatively quickly, it took Orestes around six months to get over his initial fear of it. A co-worker of mine had a similar experience with hers. Good thing we both had normal litter boxes as well at the same time so they can adjust to it at their own pace.
The Litter Robot 4 is quite newer and after making our purchase, we are very impressed with it. It is much quieter than the original. In fact, the only sound we hear is the litter moving as the orb rotates. Our cats took to it right away too since they already got used to the Litter Robot 3. What is nicer though is that it has a bigger opening for the cats so there is more room for them inside the robot. Both models make it such that we only need to change the bags around once a week helping keep things clean.
